You know how we ODRers love our VH1....

Sober House looks pretty intense. I don't know if it necessarily looks like the best or most enlightening view of recovery, but it certainly looks like a good old time....Count me in on Thursday.

    Hey Ariel,

I heard Dr. Drew on Howard Stern today and it was a great interview for several reasons.

One thing interesting is that he said he would have kicked out several people if they would have been in his facility.

I am excited to watch it.

I heard the interview today as well .. Kind of confirms that it's "good" TV, but not how it really happens .. I'm excited to watch the train wreck of Sober House too !!

I loved celeb recovery, even when I was on oxy. somewhere inside, i longed to be at the Pasadena Recovery Centre. I knew I needed it. So I am excited to see the sober house, saw some clips. look like it will be a definately good time. Good distraction. But I am not sure when it play in Toronto..Il have a look, cause I know its coming.\ Has anyone bought the book by Drew Pinsky? I fliped though it and thought it was a good read, but with CHristmas and all,I didn't get it.

Yes, and I thought the same thing, "that's a lot nicer than the house I lived in for a year when I got clean.

You know, these Hollywood types are spoiled I guess they're really going to have to rough it. I can hear it now "What day does the maid come in?" "But I need a private room"

I've got it set on the DVR. I really like Celebrity Rehab, and I'm sure I'll like this too. reminds me of where I came from.

    Mt Goat and Peacenik,

Its funny that you bring up the whole Hollywood crowd, cause one the main players on Howard Stern is a comedian named Artie Lang. He has struggled with all kinds of addictions. He had a relapse and has been sober for 19 days as of today.

Well, I only heard part of this but he missed a day or so when they came back on the air because he was in a detox place. But, the room was not adequate for him and he checked out to stay in a nicer hotel.

Apparently a clean rug was very important to him. lol.....

Zoie can you please keep us updated on Artie???? I haven't heard anything about him since I stopped listening.... he had a relapse? Ugh. Why am I not shocked? Anyway, would love it if you would keep me posted. Hopefully with good news. I love Artie.

    Hey, Ariel,

I will for sure. I have not been able to listen as much since I have been back from Vacation but one thing that was really just shocking was that Dr. Drew read Arties book and said that he thought he knew why Artie has had so many issues with addiction.

Apparently his dad fell off the roof the day that Artie started college. So, he has felt guilt over not being there that day and holding the ladder for his dad. Wow....

So, Dr. Drew told him that his dad would not want him to join him (in death) and that he should live.

Another thing that was brought out was that Dr. Drew knew the reason why Artie did not like talk therapy and it was because of the fear of reliving some of the pain.

Dr. Drew was adamant that he get into AA and get a sponsor that day. Apparently, Artie had a sponsor a few years ago but he died from a heart attack.

Dr. Drew also surprised me by telling Artie not to do talk therapy at least for 6 months because that could actually cause too much stress for him. But, that he should do meetings every day.

Dr. Drew is a huge proponent of AA and basically said that it was the only thing that would help Artiel.

    Haha....Artiel. Nice slip. [:p]

Yup...I mean...I'm not so sure that is any great detective work on Dr Drew's part, to be honest. I mean, it has always seemed pretty clear that he blames himself for that. And what his dad (and his family) went through afterward is just awful. He was completely paralyzed and bedridden and completely miserable...Nurses had to come in and help him do EVERYTHING...Artie has shared a great deal about the accident, his dad, and aftermath.

What did Artie say about AA? Did he yes him just to shut him up? Or did he refuse to do even that?

Man you guys are making me miss my VH1. I used to watch ALL that stuff. Unfortunately it went from Celebrity Rehab to Flavor of Love and Rock of Love and anything else they showed, oh yeah, that Brady show (I liked her though) ... does Sober House look worth it? Will I understand it not having seen the last show?

Haha. I don't think you have anything to worry about, Dani. I didn't see the last show, either. I haven't watched any tv since I moved in....and to be honest, I'll probably forget to watch Sober House. But I guarantee you that if we watch it, we will understand it.

Sorry for the Slip.... I have a couple of keys on my computer that stick..... And, I have a bad habit of not re-reading what I write. lol....

I did not watch the last show either. Seriously, the whole reality thing is getting riciculous. I can't watch Jerry Springer, ever. I just feel so uncomfortable at what is going on. I guess that is the counselor in me cause I think of what these people are going to do after the show.

Having said that, I do like the rehab shows. For one, its like community service. If the celebrity is there for the right purpose, by them sharing their struggle they can help others.

Back to AA, you know how Artie is... He admitted when he did AA for that period of time he was sober for 11 months he only went to about 3 meetings. But, I guess the sponsor was very helpful. So, Dr. Drew told him he had to commit and I think it made Artie uncomfortable because he was making joke after joke. He never said those "AHA' words of "You are right", or "I will go to a meeting today"

    I watched Sober House tonight.

I have a few questions about the show.

On the HS show the other day Dr. Drew said that things were different on the show than it would be in real life. That, people get more chances than what they normally would.

At a Sober Living what would really happen if you brought drugs into the home?

Apparently they get 3 chances to mess up and then they are kicked out.

Also, the house mom is only 2 1/2 years sober. Is that enough time?
I am just wondering about her sanity and well being. I have worked in shelters so I know how hard it can be.

My first week of working in a battered woman's shelter we had to kick out a mom cause she was caught with alchohol. Well, she also had two very young daughters. I will never forget that. Never. I almost changed my mind about my career in that one moment.

One last thing for Ariel....... I heard on Howard yesterday that Artie has recently needed to take subutex. And, the staff new right away when he took it. They could tell with his behavior.

Oh, and Howard is still saying that they are going to give him random drug tests even though if he fails I have no idea what they would do.

wow. i have to say...well first of all, i only saw a couple of episodes of the first season of celebrity rehab, and none of season two. but i kind of thought this was going to be like the rest of vh1, and kind of fun. despite the subject matter. i dont know where i got that idea. wow. it's really heavy so far. at least, that's my opinion. it's just really sad.

i think i just mean, that so far, this seems to be done a lot more seriously than celebrity rehab. at least, from the little i have seen of both shows.

or maybe it's me and my perception. i have no idea.

the post-treatment house I was at....you use once...you're kicked out. you're found with drugs...out. done.

Artie Lange has been on sub before. He used to champion suboxone on the HS show....calling it a miracle drug....as he gained 100 pounds and drooled from the mic.

I happen to catch parts of the show the other night. And what really got me was the utter disconcern for the others in the house that were trying to do the right thing. Dr Drew and crew seemed more worried about the safety of Adler than the safety of others living in the house! A good, well run sober house kicks him out on the spot .... no drama, no phone calls ..... pack up and leave. Why? Not for the concern of the addict using, but so the others do not have to deal with unneccessary drama and stress. God knows they have plenty ....

I know of a few sober living houses where you can get kicked out for not working steps. Cannot leave the premises without a roomate if you haven't read your 4th step. Two mandatory meetings in the house (inventory meeting and AA meeting) and a mandatory house dinner. 1 person has relapsed while living there ...... the place breeds positive action.

The other reason that the sober living enacts the out of here now protocol is that relapses breed other relapses. Domino effect. I have rarely seen just one person use within the confines. Its not done in a vacuum....it becomes toxic to others. The drama also detracts from supplying needed attention to addicts who are doing the next right thing and trying to get through living C&S on a daily basis. The drama spreads like topsy....staff members have only so much time and energy. When they're trying to put out fires & and a crisis...the guys who are really serious get left in the lurch.

That said, I will tell you that in the rehab I work for...we do believe in 2nd chances...even for someone who has relapsed...and relapsed on premises. Each case is looked at on an individual basis. If, for example, a newcomer relapses with another resident who has been here several months....the more senior resident is gone. The newcomer allowed to stay with one major proviso...that they have told the truth.

Lying is considered the graver offense here and that will get a resident booted out in a NY Minute. Additionally, the relapser is usually placed on a very specific contract of requirements and a hell of a lot of structure...more than is usual for here.

Physical violence is the other biggie. No 2nd chance.

I don't know that I would have ever managed to stay clean for that first year in the recovery house if I knew I could have a second or third chance. I find it kinda hard to believe that a house can run that way.

I remember several times someone would be caught using. They would announce a community meeting to discuss it. They'd let the person explain what happened and I'll tell you sometimes they'd have a good story and they'd ask for another chance.

But the answer was always the same. "You've got to gather your stuff and leave". I realized then that the community meeting had been for our benefit. I'd been kicked out of places in the past with no place to go and watching one of my housemates walk out into the cold gave me a sick feeling in my stomach. Tough? Yeah, but I needed that support. If ever a thought of using came up, I knew right away what the consequence would be.
